4 november 2026, Claude (scout, Sonnet): OCR-tekst van archive.org (bub_gb_13stAAAAMAAJ_djvu.txt) gedownload en gelezen. Kaap: 'At last, on Wednesday [November 22], at noon, having the wind astern, we succeeded in doubling the Cape' (met voetnoot: Castanheda zegt woensdag 20/21 november, Wednesday was de 22e). Calicut, 'Off Calecut, August 27-30' (jaartal 1498 volgens de dagaanduiding 'Monday, the 13th August, 1498' eerder in de tekst): 'inasmuch that we had discovered the country we had come in search of, as also spices and precious stones, and it appeared impossible to establish cordial relations with the people, it would be as well to take our departure'. Handel van Calicut: 'From this country of Calecut ... come the spices which are consumed in the East and the West ... much ginger and pepper and cinnamon'; 'The Mecca vessels carry these spices ... to a city in Mecca called Judea [Jidda] ... transhipped to smaller vessels ... through the Red Sea ... called Tuuz [Suez] ... camels ... Quayro [Cairo] ... Nile ... Roxette [Rosetta] ... Alexandria ... visited by the galleys of Venice and Genoa, in search of these spices'. OCR-fouten gecorrigeerd. Of de vertaling Ravenstein de regels in het Portugese origineel getrouw weergeeft, is niet gecontroleerd.
